Prevalence of malocclusions in patients from Elena Fernández de Castro Polyclinic, Los Palacios municipality

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the basic objective of our social medicine is to prevent, intercept and cure any disease, in order to guarantee the health of the people. Malocclusions, according to the World Health Organization, occupy the third place as oral health problems, not risking patient’s life, but because of their prevalence and incidence are health disorders.Objective: to describe the main anomalies of occlusion in patients attending orthodontic consultation in Los Palacios municipality, from September to December 2015.
Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study was performed in patients attending Orthodontics consultation at Elena Fernández Castro polyclinic in Los Palacios municipality from September to October, 2015. The target group consisted of 150 patients who came to consultation. An intentional sampling was applied, being represented by 50 patients with the diagnosis of malocclusion.
Results: 62.0% of patients were female from 10 to 14 years old. The most frequent occlusal anomaly was the increased prominence or vestibuloversion, found in 48.0% of the population. Lingual protraction was a deforming oral habit practiced by 60.0% and Angle Class-I was found in 56.0% of patients.
Conclusions: Angle Class-I and vestibuloversion were the most common malocclusions found in girls between the ages of 10 and 14, who practiced lingual protraction.
