Educational intervention on oral cancer for sixth-year medical students

ABSTRACT
Introduction: oral cancer is one of the most significant diseases in human life due to the permanent sequelae in oral complex, up to the correct strategy is found, prevention is the choice.Objective: to analyze the effectiveness of an educational intervention implemented to sixth-year medical students.
Methods: a non-observational, quasi-experimental study was carried out on sixth-year medical students from the school of medicine during the academic year 2015-2016. The target group was comprised of 305 students from the sixth-year of medical studies and the sample included 41 students chosen through a simple random sampling. The research took place during three defined periods: a first moment to diagnose and to identify the learning needs, a second moment to implement the intervention and the last moment to assess the impact of the intervention.
Results: 70,6% of students showed insufficient knowledge about oral cancer. Only 26,8% showed skills to practice oral self-examination, and there was a lack of knowledge about risk factors, signs of alarm and more frequent locations. An educational intervention was designed and implemented.
Conclusions: the design and implementation of an educational intervention increased the level of knowledge in all of the topics treated, which demonstrates its effectiveness.
