Consumption of alcoholic beverages by adolescents at José Martí Junior High School in Pinar del Río municipality

ABSTRACT
Introduction: drug addiction is a major problem for humanity. Alcoholism is the most important and widespread addiction. Adolescence is still an early age, which is prone to be influenced by the education of students where they are able to develop self-reliance in health care to reach their adult stage.Objective: to characterize the consumption of alcoholic beverages in adolescents at José Martí Urban Junior High School in Pinar del Rio municipality during 2015.
Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted. Out of a target group of 676 students, the sample comprised 207 students matching the inclusion criteria. Theoretical and empirical methods were used, the variables expressed the objectives, and the data obtained were manually processed using a Personal Computer, a statistical study of percentages was applied to them.
Results: the age group of 15 years and older with male sex predominated. The level of knowledge about alcohol intake was fair, and the ways they way to obtain information on the subject are mainly from television and other audiovisual media. Most of them drink alcohol occasionally, gastritis and behavior problems at school proved to be the prevailing clinical and psychosocial manifestations.
Conclusions: alcohol consumption was observed in adolescents, wrong lifestyle should be modified in order to improve the quality of life for this vulnerable population.
