ABSTRACT
In the present paper, tendencies in student enrolment into higher education schools (HES) by gender have been analyzed, with special emphasis on medical training within the past 24 years. An observational, descriptive, and retrospective study was carried out among Mexico’s male and female pregradute student population. Results show an increase in female enrolment, especially into the areas of education, humanities, and health sciences. In the latter area, results show a tendency towards an increase in female registration throughout the country in both private and public schools. The evolution of female enrolment in the National Autonomous University of Mexico School of Medicine in the period 1980-2003 is a typical example of this growing tendency of female student registration matched with a sizable reduction in the number of male students enrolled in medical school; a tendency observed both internally and nationwide.
