ABSTRACT
Diabetes type II results of the interaction between genetic and environmental factors . To determine
the relative influence of genetic factors by means of pedigree allow an accurate advice about
environmental factors related to style of life, before clinical expression of the pathology.
The aim of this research was to detect the genetic background of Diabetes type II in students and
to train them in making and interpreting pedigrees and in promotive and preventive actions about
the environmental factors. Human Genetics’ class students of the Rosario School of Medicine of the
Interamerican Open University (n=267) made their own Diabetes pedigree.
Results: 44,2% (n=118) of students had diabetes records; 6,8% were present in first degree
relatives, 76,3% in second degree relatives and 16,9% in both of them.
Clinical expression appears after reaching threshold, determined by environmental factors. To sum
up, pedigree analysis helped to detect students with Diabetes records; so applying a special
instructive module designed for supporting promotive and preventive actions on their relatives,
general physicians and specialists may contribute to diminishing the risk of appearance of Diabetes
in predisposed subjects by acting on the cited environmental factors.
