ABSTRACT
Introduction: The esophagic cancer of the upper third represents the 15% of the esophagic cancer and it is one of the tumours with worst prediction, because the therapeutic alternatives are restricts and its global survival are very low. Objective: Know and communicate the reality of esophagic cancer of the upper third between the years 2002 and 2006 at the Hospital Guillermo Grant Benavente, Concepcion, Chile. Material and Method: Transversal descriptive study, we studied 13 patients by sex, age, deep of penetration, histology, treatment. Analysis of survival by Kaplan-Meier method. Results: Males 10 (77%) and females 3 (23%). Age average 67 years old (49-90). In 12 patients (92%) at the moment of diagnosis was advanced cancer, and one patient (8%) did not any study of the tumour. Histology: Squamous 12(92%) and adenosquamous 1(8%). Treatment. 8 patients (62%) did only treatment to alleviate intention and in 5(38%) reject or non treatment. Average of survival is 3 months and to 9 months of diagnosis it is of 0%. Conclusion: In our center the upper third esophagic cancer is diagnosed out of phase to healing treatment, and the waited survival for our patients it doesn’t overcome one year of survival in the 100% of the patients. It is necessary to give an incentive to early diagnosis and we have got to work as a team.
