Nursing intervention in managing urinary tract infection in neonates

ABSTRACT
Introduction: nursing staff have had for years the great responsibility of the integral care of neonates who suffer from a urinary infection.Objective: to describe main aspects of the nursing intervention in neonates with urinary tract infection admitted in the Neonatology service.
Methods: a cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive study in neonates admitted at "José Luis Miranda" Pediatric Hospital from Villa Clara was carried out between January and December, 2017. The study universe was constituted by 45 patients who were admitted with clinical signs of possible urinary tract infections, while the sample was 38 children whose diagnosis was confirmed.
Results: 68.5 % of the patients were male; in 57.9 % the predominant symptom was fever, while in 47.3 %, was the flat weight curve or no weight gain; according to the most common nursing intervention: 100 % of the patients (6 880) received newborn care, 78.9 % (7 310) required nursing care at admission, and 65.8 % (5 244) needed breastfeeding counseling.
Conclusions: there is a predominance of males aged 15-28 days. Newborn cares at admission and breastfeeding counseling were the nursing intervention that prevailed.
