ABSTRACT
Introduction: The practice of medicine confronts the surgeon continuously with ethical dilemmas. Difficult decisions force the health professional to make value judgments choosing a path that respects the patient's satisfaction and expectations without neglecting the permissible from the medical point of view. It is essential that the multidisciplinary team involved and committed to the treatment of patients with dentomaxillofacial disharmonies be clear about the objectives that can be achieved with the treatment process, considering first the benefit to the patient, objectives that cannot be disconnected from the principles ethical.Methods: A review of the theoretical foundations and more general principles of the ethical dilemmas inherent in decision making in Maxillofacial Surgery is undertaken when dealing with patients with dentomaxillofacial disharmonies as part of the treatment process.
Conclusions: Decision making in patients with dentomaxillofacial disharmonies entails ethical dilemmas both in the decision of the type of treatment to be used and in achieving a balance between the aesthetic, functional and satisfaction of the patient's expectations.
