Populational and experts criteria on advanced esophagus cancer

ABSTRACT
Introduction: It is estimated that patients who suffer from advanced esophagus cancer may die in the posterior year of the diagnosis. One of the biggest challenges this kind of patients must face is the way of feeding; stomas, as an option, is a biopsychosocial problem.Objective: To determine the experts, sick patients and esophagus cancer non familiarized healthy people criteria about ethical discussion in the ways of feeding esophagus cancer patients.
Material and methods: Representative groups were evaluated through questionnaire which included patients, their family and experts teams. Ethical parameters in the prosecution of the gathered information were respected.
Results: There is a more flexible medical personal criterion for a wide knowledge of the disease, looking forward an ethical solution despite of the awareness that there are only palliative cares. These patients rather keep their capability of eating even knowing all the risks.
Conclusions: Feeding is not just a requirement for biological nutrition but a social and psychological need; it is a priority to pursuit methods to restore this function in esophagus cancer patients. Esophagus prosthesis could solve this ethical dilemma.
