Dental retention in 8 to 18 years-old orthodontic patients

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The eruption is the movement of the tooth toward the flat oclusal that begins in a variable way when the crown is completed and the formation of the root has begun.Objective: To identify the dental retentions in orthodontic patients of José Martí Policlinic.
Material and Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study in the health area of José Martí Teaching Policlinic Santiago from Cuba during the period December of 2015 to March of 2016. The sample belonged to 122 patients which fulfilled the following approaches: patient from 8 to 18 years of age, of both sexes, to possess x-ray panoramic, to present retained tooth. Variables age, sex, ethnic group, witnesses of the retention it would jag, retained dental group and localization were studied. The variables were written down in a schedule, after having analysed the x-ray, it was used as summary measure the percentage.
Results: The prevalence of retained teeth was of 40.7 %, of them the most frequent were the canines (62.2%) and those fewer represented the incisive (6.5%) ones. The more affected sex was female (62.2%), the group of 8-11 year-old age and (48.3%) those of the mixed ethnic group (59.2%).
Conclusions: The retention prevalence was high with regard to classic literatures and strange and similar series to national current studies.
