From Kegel exercises to pelvic floor rehabilitation: A physiotherapeutic perspective

ABSTRACT
Different pelvic floor therapy strategies have been adopted by physicians, urologists,
gynecologists, and physiotherapists. However, the concept of pelvic floor physiotherapy
is not yet clear for the majority of professionals, who continue to suggest activities that
can actually be more harmful to the patient than beneficial. Consequently, the aim of
this review article was to present the concept of pelvic floor physiotherapy, from its
origins to its current principles, so that healthcare professionals can apply the therapy
to their patients based on a clear understanding of the approach.
