ABSTRACT
Introduction: Fractures in paediatric patients affect the thoracic member up to 83%, and 5 to 18% of all fractures belong
to the elbow. The most frequent elbow fractures are: supracondylar, lateral condyle and medial epicondyle. They are related
to compartment syndrome, nervous injury or angular deformity, which is why it is important to know their frequency.
Objetive:
To determine the frequency of elbow fractures by anatomical region in our pediatric population.
Materials and methods:
Retrospective, cross sectional and observational study of patients with elbow fracture diagnosis who were attended between
March 2014 to February 2017.
Results: There was a total of 433 patients, 64% had supracondylar fracture, 11% lateral
condyle, 8% medial epicondyle, 6% radiu’s neck, 4% olecranon, 2% luxations, 2% medial condyle, 1% capitellum, 1% Montegia’s
fracture luxation and 1% T condylar fracture. 62% were 5 or 6 years old, 58% male and 42% female. 64% of fractures
affected the left side and 36% the right side.
Conclusion: The supracondylar fractures represent the most frequent pediatric
elbow injury, with 64%. They more often occur in 5 and 6 years old male patients, on the left side.
