ABSTRACT
Maternal death is unacceptably high; about 830 women die each day worldwide due to complications related to pregnancy, childbirth or puerperium. By the end of 2015, some 303,000 women would have died due to obstetric causes. All these deaths occur in low-income countries and most of them could have been prevented. The quality of maternal health was one of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) adopted by the international community in the year 2000, among them Mexico, which committed to reduce maternal death by 75% between 1990 and 2015. Since 1990 several sub-Saharan countries have halved their maternal mortality. In some regions, such as Asia and North Africa, progress has been even greater than in other regions of the world. Between 1990 and 2015, the Maternal Death Ratio (MMR) worldwide, that is, the number of maternal deaths per 100 thousand registered live births was only reduced by 2.3% per year. However, since 2000 an acceleration of this reduction was observed. In some countries, the annual reductions in the MMR between 2000 and 2010 exceeded the 5.5% needed to achieve the MDG. In Mexico, to achieve this commitment, the MMR had to decrease by 2.7 points annually, but it has been only achieved a reduction average of 2.1 points in this period. According to the findings of this research, if the trend recorded in the official reports of 2015, the preliminaries of 2016 and the advance in October of 2017 persists, the MDG of an RMM of 22.3 would be achieved in the year 2021.REFERENCES
