ABSTRACT
Gender-based violence transcends the public sphere to become a problem of a social nature. The study of social representations of gender-based violence makes it possible to visualize beliefs, values and attitudes that underlie this phenomenon, as well as possible transformations and questions to patterns of patriarchal authority. Objective. Characterize the social representations of gender-based violence in a group of women from the municipality of Centro Habana. Methodology. Qualitative, with an exploratory-descriptive design. The research sample was constituted by 25 women of that municipality. The techniques used for the collection of the information were the semi-structured interview, the semantic differential and the free association of words. Content analysis was the tool for information processing. Results. The social representations of gender-based violence were not linked to the imbalance of power that has historically characterized the relations between men and women, but to multiple factors. There is a minority that revealed an alternative position, since they understood gender-based violence from the asymmetric distribution of power. The most recognized manifestation of gender-based violence by the group of study was the physical one, although they identified psychological, sexual and economic violence. They note the persistence and seriousness of this phenomenon for the health and well-being of the victim, since they identified dissimilar repercussions that range from psychological traces to death. There was a generalized rejection of gender-based violence, which was evident in their negative attitudes. Conclusions. There was widespread ignorance of gender-based violence, which hinders its recognition, and permeates and weakens the possibility of confrontation and containment.
