ABSTRACT
Introduction: Falls are one of the main causes of hip fracture. They affect around 90 % of the population, mainly, in advanced age (over 65 years of age) and the majority of patients are female. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of educational actions aimed at preventing hip fractures due to falls in adults over 65 years of age.
Methods: A prospective pre-experimental investigation was carried out in the medical office 3.9, basic group of work no. 2 in Quemado de Güines, from September 2016 to January 2017. Forty families of adults over 65 years of age formed the sample. Educational actions designed to prevent hip fractures due to falls were designed and implemented. The answers given by the families in the questionnaire were used when designing these actions. This questionnaire measured the knowledge the subjects had on the importance of the physical exercises, the pharmacological actions, the diet and nutrition and the control of the toxic habits to avoid falls. After carrying out these educational actions, the questionnaire was again applied to know the level of satisfaction of this study group. The corresponding ethical principles were taken into account.
Results: Differences in the answers before and after educational actions were observed in this questionnaire. The results were as expected. There were significant changes in terms of the knowledge generating variables used in the research. According to the family relatives, these educational actions constituted a positive and enriching contribution, in as much they propitiated knowledge acquisition, incorporation of knowledge and abilities, care, responsibility, condition and desirable human values.
Conclusions: Educational actions are effective, which calls for their development under real conditions and in other similar contexts to favor the prevention of hip fractures due to falls.
