ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of COMBI (Communication for Behavioral Impact) through its implementation in hyperendemic populations with high prevalence and incidence of dengue, observing and motivating changes in risk behaviors for protective ones in the population of Barranquilla. Methods: Descriptive study with a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 150 homes, in three neighborhoods prioritized by high prevalence, high pupal index and resistance to previous community interventions. Through a semi-structured interview technique about knowledge, beliefs and behaviorsTh e information achieved was processed in Excel, exported to the Epi-info’s epidemiological program for its analysis, and approved by the Institutional Ethical Committee. Results: There was a strong relationship between flaws in knowledge, risk perception and the low sustainability of behavioral change in people. At first fase 61% of the interviewees didn’t identify the vector. 51% knew that it reproduces in clean stored water. 31% of the deposits had presence of larvae. After the intervention the community showed ability to make changes in habits and behaviors by real understanding of the risks, thus: elimination of 77% of deposits. Adequate washing increased by 33%; The hermetic cover increased by 30% and the presence of immature in the water decreased by 28%. Conclusions: In order to obtain the desired outcomes, not only, must interventions be entirely fulfi lled, but also better communication strategies such as content of the message, frequency, transmission channels, and a steady accompaniment to the population should be implemented to provide people with more accurate information which motivates them to develop an appropriate perception of risk, agency, a sense of self-efficacy and empowerment in terms of self-care and the intention of change in the individual and their environment.REFERENCES
