ABSTRACT
Introduction: Peripheral vascular diseases are important risk factors associated with cerebral, cardiac and limb ischemic complications. Objective: To characterize patients with peripheral vascular disease and complications derived from them.
Method: Descriptive study in patients with peripheral vascular diseases, from angiology and vascular surgery surgery of the Provincial Hospital "Saturnino Lora" of Santiago de Cuba, in the period from January 2015 to December 2016. Universe of 265 patients and sample of 162 patients. Variables studied: personal pathological background of cerebrovascular complications, cardiovascular and limb amputations, type of vascular disease, presence of clinical criteria that suggested the need for surgical amputation.
Results: 7.1% presented a history of at least one episode of ischemic cerebrovascular disease. The percentage of individuals suffering from heart disease amounted to 18.9%. More than 10% of patients with a history of amputation were carriers of peripheral vascular disease of arterial origin. Almost 50% of patients with peripheral vascular disease had criteria for surgical limb amputation.
Conclusions: Patients affected by peripheral vascular disease showed higher percentages of cardiovascular than cerebrovascular complications. Peripheral vascular disease was predominant in patients with a history of surgical limb amputation. Nearly half of the patients with clinical evidence of peripheral vascular disease had criteria for amputation.
