ABSTRACT
Introduction: Nursing training does not include the process of donation and transplantation, only the therapeutic processes to guarantee the vital functions or the viability of the organs of the donor. The evaluation of nursing competence in the transplant program is essential to measure effectiveness, to identify deficiencies of the process and to introduce measures that optimize quality. Objective: To evaluate the level of professional competence of nurses in the process of donation and transplantation.
Methods: A descriptive, transversal research was carried out. The work of the nursing professionals linked to the donation and transplant process at the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Clinical-Surgical University Hospital in Holguín was evaluated in 2015. The sample consisted of 106 professionals. An evaluative instrument was prepared and validated that allowed the output of variables related to knowledge areas, care management, clinical and instrumented tests to diagnose brain death, protection of organs in potential donors and perioperative care.
Results: It was found that more than 95 % of the respondents were evaluated as competent. They had adequate response levels higher than 95 %. They showed high level of updating. The higher frequency of error was related to the knowledge about organ perfusion for transplantation.
Conclusions: The level of competence shown in the professionals studied was adequate. However, nursing training programs with the theme of donation and removal of organs are needed.
