ABSTRACT

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, multisystemic, autoimmune disease characterised by a common symmetrical diarthrodial presentation of pain, inflammation, stiffness and increased volume, affecting the synovial membrane. Currently the Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (HAQ-DI) is the most widely used index of choice for determining the functional capacity of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and its relationship to their lifestyle, housing, employment and economic status. The RANK/RANKL/OPG system has been shown to participate in the pathophysiological mechanism of focal and generalized bone loss in rheumatoid arthritis, which triggers a decrease in the functional capacity of patients.
