ABSTRACT
Background: One of the main environmental concerns
facing the Dominican Republic is the deficiency in the
management of urban solid waste. The contamination
of waste in public and private spaces, the absence of
classification systems, the lack of public policies and the
scarcity of public awareness represent a great challenge
for municipalities. The collection and inadequate
disposal of garbage not only produces a strong
environmental deterioration but also contributes to
the proliferation of pests, among which mosquitoes
(Diptera, Culicidae) stand out.
Objective: To deepen
on the different species of culicids that are associated
to urban solid waste in public spaces.
Material and
methods: The study was conducted in the municipality
of Jarabacoa, province of La Vega. Pre-imaginal
mosquito stages were sampled and the different wastes
were categorized, studying their specific productivity
in terms of diversity and relative abundance.
Results:
The accumulation of waste in public spaces allowed the
proliferation of species such as
Aedes aegypti and
Aedes
albopictus (transmitters of dengue, chikungunya and
Zika viruses), or
Culex quinquefasciatus (transmitter
of West Nile virus and lymphatic filariasis), which
use the trash as a reservoir for the development of
their immature forms.
Conclusion: Several mosquito
species of vector relevance colonize different types
of urban solid waste, therefore it is recommended
to strengthen preventive measures with educational
strategies and undertake a more thorough cleaning
of public spaces, in order to reduce the health risks
related to the presence of these insects.
