ABSTRACT
Purpose: Evaluate the morbidity and mortality aft er
elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies.
Matherial and
methods: All elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies
performed through 2017 were analyzed. Patients´
demographics, surgical time, intraoperative bleeding,
morbidity and mortality at 6 weeks postoperative period
were recorded according to Strasberg classifi cation.
Results: 544 elective cholecystectomies were performed
in patients 16 to 86 years old (median 42). 462 patients
(85%) were female and 82 (15%) were males. Mortality
rate was 0%. We found mild complications (seroma,
surgical site infection and atelectasis) in 1.78%,
moderate complications (postoperative bleeding,
biliary fi stula and acute pancreatitis) in 1.18%, and
severe complications (residual choledocholithiasis and
incisional hernias) in 1.09% of patients.
Conclusions:
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard
for treatment of biliary disease, since it has low rate of
morbidity and mortality.
