ABSTRACT
A descriptive and cross sectional study of 58 before term newborns, with very low weight, assisted in "Abel Santamaría Cuadrado" Teaching General Hospital in Pinar del Río was carried out in the period 2012-2013, with the objective of determining the morbility and mortality due to this cause. The analysis of medical records provided the information from which the studied variables emerged. The female sex, with a mean of 30.3 ± 2.7 weeks at the moment of birth and of 1 229 ± 183 g of weight prevailed in the series. The morbility was mostly related to the hyaline membrane disease and the intraventricular hemorrhage which antecedents were toxemic mothers and the premature rupture of membrane of more than 18 hours; while, the survival was of 72.4 % and the intraventricular hemorrhage constituted the main cause of death. The obtained information allows to trace new work lines with the objective of achieving an effective care to these patients and to decrease either morbility, as the mortality in early ages of life.
