ABSTRACT
Hematopoietic progenitor transplantation (HPT) has in recent years been a curative therapeutic option for patients with benign or malignant haematological disorders. Infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, and the etiology and risk of infection vary in relation to the post-transplant stage in which it occurs. Cytomegalovirus infection is a latent risk in the patient undergoing HPT, not all individuals present the same risk of infection or disease; depending on age, type of transplant, myeloablative scheme used, serologic status of donor (D) and recipient (R), and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The seroprevalence in the world population for CMV in school-age children is 30%, reaching 80% in the adult population, meaning that serology in the donor and recipient is essential for risk statification as well as to establish prevention measures and timely treatment.
