Immunizations in candidates to kidney and liver transplant and recipients

ABSTRACT
Many vaccine-preventable diseases affect solid organ transplant recipients, yet they continue to be underutilized in this
population. Vaccine immunogenicity is variable among transplant candidates and recipients, and it is less when
compared to healthy subjects. Despite this fact, partial protection is considered better than none at all. Transplant
protocols must include immunization guidelines, and all the health care personnel involved in caring for transplant
candidates and recipients should be familiar with the indications and contraindications of the different vaccines. We
recommend the use of a checklist to keep track of immunizations as part of a comprehensive evaluation prior to the
transplant and apply those that are missing or were partially applied after transplantation. The pretransplant
evaluation also provides the opportunity to educate patients about the importance, risks and benefits of proper
immunization. We discuss the application criteria and specifications of recommended vaccines.
