ABSTRACT
Background: drug addiction among adolescents and young people is one of the most pressing problems facing Ecuadorean education in several of its educational centers throughout the country, regardless of the socioeconomic development of the region, parish, canton or province in question, which brings deep concern not only to the educational authorities but also at the government level. Objective: to offer some theoretical considerations about the causes that create this phenomenon in Ecuadorean society.
Methods: an inquiry was carried out in some Educational Units from Ecuador with the purpose of identifying the causes of the consumption of drugs in adolescents and young people. The search of information about the topic was obtained in the databases Thomas Reuters, Scopus, Latindex, Scielo, Redalycs and Hinari, where 12 documents were found and among them 5 that tackled specially the topic of addiction in Ecuador were used. The Describers Health Sciences were used: adolescents, young, drugs, addiction.
Results: the most significant causes that led these young people to consume drugs were determined, such as family dysfunction that causes the lack of family support to these young people, the influence of the environment in which young people develop and the lack of knowledge about the effect of drugs on their health and social relationships. It was identified that the drug most consumed is marijuana, followed by alcohol and inhalants.
Conclusions: the Ministry of Education of Ecuador is in a worrisome situation in view of the tendency to increase addictions in its student population, for which they have to deploy joint actions with all social aspects that can contribute to counteract this social scourge.
