ABSTRACT
Frailty is defined as a biologic syndrome in older
adults characterized as the depletion of homeostatic
reserve and reduced resistance to stressors provoked
by cumulative declines in several physiological
systems. Frailty syndrome is relevant in Mexico
due to the country’s demographic aging process
resulting from the combination of the increase in
life expectancy and a sustained decrease in fecundity
leading to a significant augmentation in the mean
age of the population and a increasing proportion of
elderly people.
Objectives: To estimate the prevalence
of frailty syndrome among older adults enrolled in the
Universitary System for Older Adults.
Methodology:
Fried’s criteria modified by Avila Funes were used to
determine the presence of frailty syndrome among
older adults enrolled in the Universitary System for
Older Adults who attended a presentation about
frailty syndrome that took place at the State’s Public
Library.
Results: Frailty syndrome was present in
7.7% of the participants, 35% were classified as prefrail
and 56,4% as non-frail.
Conclusion: In Mexico,
frailty represents a current and future public health
issue that requires to be addressed immediately. It is
needed to embrace strategies like raising awareness
among primary-care physicians about prevention,
early diagnosis and treatment of this syndrome.
