ABSTRACT
Introduction: flatfoot in infants is one of the most controversial topics due to the greater difference of criteria regarding its diagnosis and treatment. Objective: to contrast the different orthopodologic treatments used for flexible flatfoot.
Methods: a scientific literature search was performed between October, 2017 and January, 2018 in order to identify possible studies of the different treatments for flexible flatfoot. Main search engines and biomedical databases such as Medline, Pubmed, Enfispo, Scopus and Cochrane Library were consulted.
Results: 164 research article abstracts with the selected keywords were found, 106 of them were excluded because they did not meet the selection criteria. Therefore, the sample was constituted by 58 potentially relevant abstracts. Seven of these were studies of conservative treatments for the flexible flatfoot, 18 studies of surgical treatments, 31 descriptive analysis and 2 systematic reviews.
Conclusions: we pointed out the lack of studies with conservative and orthoprosthetic treatments in general. On the contrary, there is a wide bibliography about studies of diverse surgical techniques for flexible flatfoot. That is why future researches should get valid and reliable classification methods that facilitate the study and provide adequately valued measures for the intervention that is being carried out. Research should be addressed in the future to do clinical trials including a greater number of patients that compare different combinations and algorithms of conservative treatments for analyzing its cost-effectiveness in a medium- long term.
