ABSTRACT
Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis affects the synovial joints in a variable and progressive manner. High resolution ultrasound with Doppler technique has been used in the early diagnosis of this condition. Objective: To establish the articular ultrasound pattern based on the use of high resolution ultrasound with pulsed Doppler and color, in the synovial knee condition, in patients with suspected rheumatoid arthritis.
Methods: A transversal descriptive observational study was conducted in 24 patients, 19 women and 5 men, between the third and fifth decades of life. All of them underwent ultrasound and arthroscopy.
Results: With high resolution ultrasound, 100% of the cases showed synovial proliferation, with cellular joint effusion in 41.66% and transparent in 37.50%.
Conclusions: It was demonstrated that high resolution ultrasound is an effective technique in the early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, with a validity index of 91.67%, without significant differences when compared with arthroscopy.
