ABSTRACT

Introduction: Yarn suture is the classic method for wound edge coping with a view to promoting tissue healing. Tissue adhesives are currently used as an alternative in the treatment of wounds.
Objectives: In order to evaluate the use of tissue adhesives or sutures in the surgical closure of wounds in medical practice.
Methods: a study with a cost-effectiveness decision analysis design was performed. Data were obtained from the literature, medical databases were reviewed in the period 2002-2012, 28 studies (11.4 %) were validated to estimate the probability of complications and success used.
Results: It was found that both alternatives offer a high probability of success (0.99) with its use for wound closure, the decision equally suggests the use of conventional sutures or tissue adhesives. Regarding the medical field, pediatrics turned out to be the choice for the use of conventional sutures being more useful its use in other areas. The use of tissue adhesives showed to be better when used in adults and specifically in surgery of the thorax and abdomen. The cost-effectiveness ratio for the use of adhesives and sutures was $7.78 and $17.65, respectively, for a wound closure effectiveness of 99% in both alternatives.
Conclusions: It is concluded that tissue adhesives represent a feasible option in terms of effectiveness, being a less costly alternative to conventional suture treatment.
