ABSTRACT
Introduction: Left ventricular systolic dysfunction is a current health problem. Cardiovascular rehabilitation is conceived as an effective and safe therapeutic pillar in these patients. Objectives: To describe the effects of cardiovascular rehabilitation on the functional capacity of patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction.
Methods: A descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study was carried out involving 49 patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction of ischemic cause who were referred to the cardiovascular rehabilitation department of Hospital Hermanos Ameijeiras. Six-month supervised physical training was indicated. They underwent ergospirometry and transthoracic echocardiography at three and six months of therapy.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 62.4 ± 11 years and the male patients predominated. Functional capacity improved significantly with therapy. Systolic function was found to be 40-49 % in most cases at 6 months of treatment and left ventricular diastolic function evolved towards improvement. At the end of the study, 89.8 % of the patients had no complications.
Conclusions: Cardiovascular rehabilitation significantly increased the functional capacity of patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction, with slight evolutionary increases in ejection fraction and improvement in left ventricular diastolic function, and had a low rate of complications.
