ABSTRACT

Background: Soft tissue sarcomas, and bone sarcomas, are rare neoplasm. These malignancies are more likely to be presented in young adults. There are several subtypes which must be treated individually. This is a current analysis of the epidemiological situation and also the management of sarcomas at the Unit of Sarcomas at Mexico Hospital in Costa Rica.
Methods: The unif of Sarcomas data base was evaluated from February 2012 to December 2017, a total of 60 registries were analyzed. Descriptive statistics were used.
Results: 70% of all sarcomas are analyzed in the multidisciplinary tumor board. Soft tissues sarcomas are more common (65.6%) in comparison with bone sarcomas. Sarcomas in general are predominantly more frequent in males (56%). 75.4% of all sarcomas come to our clinic in early stage and will receive curative intended treatment.
Conclusion: Although there are clear improvements in the multidisciplinary management approach in the Unit of Sarcomas at Mexico Hospital, even more institutional efforts are needed to optimize the timing from diagnosis to treatment in patients with sarcoma.
