ABSTRACT
Introduction: primary health care tutors play a basic role in the development of professional skills in medical students. Objective: to characterize knowledge of primary health care tutors for the development of professional skills in medical students.
Method: a descriptive and cross sectional research was carried out in the university polyclinics of Pinar del Río municipality during the academic year 2016-2017. The target group was comprised of 42 categorized tutors who teach education at work in medicine studies and the chosen sample corresponded to the target group. Theoretical methods such as logical-historical analysis and empirical methods such as interview to tutors and observation of work education activities were used; applying procedures of descriptive statistics.
Results: tutors do not know the basic elements to direct the development of professional skills in medical students; these evidences were observed throughout the activities of education at work.
Conclusions: the tutors show an insufficient pedagogical training to develop professional skills due to the lack of pedagogical preparation they have received, thus it is necessary to monitor this issue during the methodological preparations as well as in postgraduate activities.
