ABSTRACT
Introduction: pregnancy in adolescence is a global health problem and Cuba does not escape from this reality.Objective: to characterize the risk factors associated with pregnancy in adolescents at José Martí People's Council, Isla de la Juventud.
Method: a descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study, throughout January 2015 - December 2017. Place: José Martí People’s Council, belonging to the University Polyclinic No. 1 Dr. Juan Manuel Páez Inchausti, Nueva Gerona, Isla de la Juventud. Target Group and Sample: 23 pregnant teenagers corresponding to the period in study. A systematic sampling in phases was applied; as pregnancy was detected along with the decision to continue with motherhood was made. Primary source of data collection: survey. The data were processed in a computerized way, statistical measures of frequency and percentage distributions were applied.
Results: there was a predominance, within the individual risk factors, of the difficulty to plan future projects; within family risk factors: lack of communication between family and adolescent; within the socio-economic risk factors: low per capita income of families; low educational level within the cultural risk factors. With respect to the psychological risk factors: their inability to understand the consequences of the early commencement of sexual relations.
Conclusions: this characterization provides information to deal with this problem at José Martí People's Council, Isla de la Juventud, showing the need to increase promotion-prevention actions towards this age group, in order to improve their sexual and reproductive health.
