Probiotics: an update

ABSTRACT
Introduction: probiotics are living microorganisms with beneficial effects for health used in the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic diseases of the intestine, and other conditions. An update is made on their participation in the health of the intestine´s microbiota, its actions, effects and selection, in light of the most recent studies and researches.Objective: to analyze the most outstanding aspects of probiotics in digestive and extra-digestive diseases, as well as the recommendations of their application.
Methods: PubMed, Scielo and Latindex documentary databases and the Specialized Register of the Cochrane Data Group related to different probiotics until September 20, 2017 are reviewed, as well as the treatment guidelines postulated by different medical organizations which are based on the criteria of Evidence-Based Medicine.
Development: the process of the different modifications in the probiotic term, the criteria postulated by the World Health Organization/United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture, until the most recent of the International Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics, and its interest and importance are analyzed. The beneficial role of bacterial and yeast probiotics according to the selection of the species and strain is described based on the arguments provided by the researches, and having sufficient evidence to be recommended in specific medical treatments with the expectation of satisfactory results.
Conclusions: the significance of the beneficial effects of probiotics as a therapy in intestinal and extra-intestinal diseases are exposed according to the arguments provided by the most recent studies on the selection of specific species and strains to be used in medical practice.
