Urovesical schistosomiasis in Cuba. Detection of a case in a South African medical student

ABSTRACT
Schistosomiasis is one of the major health problems facing poor countries. Schistosoma haematobium is the cause of this disease in more than 100 million people in the world. The purpose of the present study is to describe and discuss a case of urinary or bladder schistosomiasis in a South African student from the Branch of Medical Sciences of Sagua la Grande. The case was a 19-year-old patient from South Africa, who had been treated for dermatitis two months before arriving in Cuba. He underwent International Sanitary Control and was diagnosed with urogenital schistosomiasis. He was treated with praziquantel and regained health without complications. The diagnosis and timely treatment of the disease contributed to the cure of the patient and to avoid complications irreversible sequelae.
