ABSTRACT
Objective: To update the aspects related to the use of self-expandable endoprostheses for the treatment of intestinal occlusion due to colon cancer.Development: The intestinal occlusion is a disease that provides the highest mortality rates in acute abdominal emergencies. The obstruction of malignant cause is considered one of the most difficult problems to face in patients with cancer. Endoluminal prostheses have emerged as highly effective alternatives for the palliative treatment of this disease, especially in patients with poor prognosis and high surgical risk. Currently these devices are being used regularly, yielding beneficial results related to the disappearance of the occlusive table, low risk of complications and adequate survival. Under these circumstances, an exploratory study was carried out to address some novel aspects related to self-expandable endoprostheses in the treatment of intestinal occlusion due to colon cancer.
Conclusions: The placement of a self-expanding metal prosthesis in the patient with an acute neoplastic obstruction of the left colon should be considered as an effective therapeutic alternative, supported by the high rates of technical and clinical success as well as the minimization of complications.
