ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the variations of the nutritional status and relate it to the type of nutrition applied and the associated factors in the different hospital moments.Materials and Methods: An applied and descriptive investigation was carried out in the period from April to November 2016, in the Intensive and Intermediate Care Service of the Saturnino Lora Torres Provincial Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital in the city of Santiago de Cuba. The sample consisted of 34 patients with neurological diseases who were given a nutritional profile to classify them as undernourished and nourished.
Results: Male sex predominated with 19 patients (55.9%) and 13 of the cases (38.2%) belonged to the most affected age group (65 years and older). Albumin was the parameter of malnutrition that had a greater significance at admission and discharge, with 15 and 21 patients, respectively. Malnutrition affected patients with Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Cerebrovascular Diseases (37.5%) in the same way, associated with nosocomial infections. The enteral route was the most used in this patient population.
Conclusions: Malnutrition was established as an incident factor in patients with severe ischemic cerebrovascular disease, at advanced ages of life at the time of discharge, although some degree of malnutrition was found at the time of admission. The predominance of this morbid state is recognized in patients with associated infectious diseases, with an impact on the nutritional status of the patients, although the form of enteral nutrition was predominantly used.
