Education for the formation of healthcare interprofessional teams

ABSTRACT
The aim of this work is to highlight the importance of including
interprofessional education (IE) in the studies plans of health care
professions, and to report some actions carried out for this
purpose. Interprofessional colaboration consists in multiple health
workers from different professional backgrounds working together
with patients, families, carers, and communities to deliver the
highest quality of care. The World Health Organization has
emphasized the importance of the promotion of interprofessional
teams formation by the studies plans of the involved professions.
Several barriers for the development of IE have been identified,
such as the scarce difussion and understanding of the concept of
interprofessionality, cultural differences among healthcare
professions, the curricular design of the studies plans, and
organizational and logistic problems. Incorporating IE activities to
the studies plans could facilitate the formation of well
communicated healthcare teams with values and ethical conduct,
with respect for the roles of the different professions involved.
Students who have participated in IE excercises use to recognize
the potential benfits of these activities.
