ABSTRACT
Introduction: thrombophilias are a heterogeneous group of conditions associated to a higher risk of occurrence of arterial, venous or both thromboses. They occur due to a functional or structural alteration of some factor related to the coagulation process. Objective: to identify the main causes of thrombophilias.
Methods: there was conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study of all adult patients who had arterial, venous or both thrombotic processes and thrombophilia markers were applied; they were seen on the Hematology Consultation at “Cardiocentro Ernesto Guevara” University Hospital of Santa Clara, Villa Clara from October, 2013 to November, 2014. The study population was constituted by 57 patients and the studied variables were age, gender, type of thrombosis, markers of thrombophilia made and combination of these.
Results: most of the patients aged 30-50 years had deep venous thrombosis with a discrete female predominance. Main causes of thrombophilia were protein S deficiency and increase of lipoprotein (a) and fibrinogen.
Conclusions: thrombophilia markers have a great predictive value to take the necessary prophylactic and therapeutic measurements in these patients, as well as, to prevent the recurrence of thrombosis.
