ABSTRACT
Introduction: acute respiratory infections constitute one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and are the main reason for consultation in patients less than 15 years of age. Objective: to characterize the manifestation of acute respiratory infections in patients less than 15 years of age belonging to a health area.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study of the total of patients seen in the medical offices from a Basic Working Group belonging to Santa Clara University Policlinic was conducted between January and December, 2015.
Results: the higher incidence was in the group aged 1-4 years (41.9 %) with a male predominance (62.5 %) and (96.2 %) in eutrophic patients who evolved favourably. The main associated risk factors were passive smoking (55.3 %) and overcrowding (16.4 %).
Conclusions: there was a predominance of acute respiratory infections in male patients aged 1-4 years, with a higher incidence of acute rhinopharyngitis among upper respiratory tract infections and bronchopneumonia among lower respiratory infections; ambulatory care was the most common for the first infection and hospital care for the second one.
