ABSTRACT
Introduction: hearing loss in children is considered a birth defect and the most common sensorineural disorder in the newborn. Its incidence is increased up to 14 times when the study population is selected based on certain risk factors. Objective: to determine the incidence of the type and amount of risk factors in the presence of hearing loss and its laterality.
Methods: a cross-sectional study in children less than one year of age with risk factors for hearing loss seen in the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory at “José Luis Miranda” Pediatric University Hospital was performed between January, 2014 and December, 2015. Descriptive statistical techniques, as well as, Chi-square test of independence were used to study possible association among the qualitative variables.
Results: half of the affected patients suffered from hypoxia as a perinatal risk factor. Hearing loss was increased almost three times in children who had more than one risk factor and bilateral hearing loss predominated among them.
Conclusions: having more than one risk factor increases the possibility of suffering from hearing loss, mainly bilateral one.
