ABSTRACT
In the contemporary scenario of cultural homogenization and new scales of values, attention must be paid to the importance of preserving traditions as practices that protect cultural diversity. This is essential to achieve an education in values consistent with the characteristics defended by current Cuban society, a matter of special significance for the National Health System because it is a legacy of the Cuban revolutionary process. The objective of this article is to explain the role played by the institutional tradition in the formation of values in health institutions. It presents a concept of tradition, which as a living expression of history in the present has the function of forming identity, sense of belonging and shared values. It concludes with a definition of institutional tradition applied to the health sector. An analysis is carried out on the process of transmission of the tradition, as a way to transfer ways of doing from one generation to the next, in which it is necessary to take into account: the will to carry it out, the importance of history for its conception and the management of institutional communication in its socialization. Elements are offered to perfect education in values through the practice of traditions, which serve as a foundation in order to legitimize the desired and shared values that are aspired to achieve in the collectives of labor institutions.
