ABSTRACT
Abbé Nollet (1770-1777) was considered a man of genius. In 1749 he created special vacuum tubes with wires sealed at one end and produced the Hauksbee. This apparatus produced sufficient glow to read large print at night by attaching conductors to Abbe´s static producing machine. Nollet’s contemporaries referred to his tube as “electrical eggs” from which x-rays were indeed to hatch. Nollet had assembled the necessary items needed for x-ray production, a vacuum tube and a source of high-voltage electricity; the addition of another sealed-in wire at the opposite end of the tube and the discovery would have been made. If in fact Nollet had produced x-rays he would have not know since they are invisible to the eye. It would be another ninety years before photographic plates were produced, and another forty years before a fluoroscopic screen capable of translating invisible short waves into visible longer waves would be invented.
