ABSTRACT
Introduction: multiple risk factors are associated with low birth weight. Objective: to deepen the study of the factors that affect low birth weight. Methods: the bibliographic search was conducted between 1992 and 2017, 75% of the selected articles were published in the last five years and the most updated were those of digital journals available in regional data bases such as SciELO, EBSCO and MEDLINE. Development: the extreme ages of life, the smoking habit in pregnant women (due to the nicotine concentration, which affects the growth and development of the fetus and decreases its oxygenation and nutrition), the vaginal infection (that causes early cervical changes or triggers uterine activity and leads to preterm accouchement) and anemia are important factors in determining birth weight. Conclusions: various maternal conditions: anemia, urinary tract infection, preeclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, few gain of maternal ponderate weight, hypertensive syndrome of pregnancy, psychosocial factors and smoking are predictive risks of low birth weight.
