Epidemiological behavior of tuberculosis

ABSTRACT
Introduction: tuberculosis is the eldest of the pandemic diseases and causes almost 1.7 million deaths and nine millions of new cases every year.Objective: to determine the epidemiologic behavior of tuberculosis in the municipality of Matanzas.
Materials and methods: a retrospective, descriptive, observational study was carried out in the period from January 2010 to December 2014. The universe were the total of 42 patients with diagnosis of tuberculosis in all its forms. All of them were included in the study.
Results: It was found a tendency to a decrease of tuberculosis in the municipality of Matanzas, being the most affected health area the Contreras one, with 11 cases, for 52.8 %. The highest number of symptomatic patients of more than 14 days was found in 2011, with 2 739, most of them from the health area of the Teaching Policlinic “José Jacinto Milanés”, with 814 patients.
Conclusions: the number of tuberculosis cases with positive sputum smears predominated for 61 %. More than half of them were diagnosed in the secondary health care, showing a program failure. 89.8 % of the patients had pulmonary location with a wide predominance of it.
