Characterization of the thyroid cancer in the Hospital 'Dr. Agostinho Neto', Guantanamo

ABSTRACT
Introduction: in Guantanamo the thyroid cancer has not been studied. Objective: to characterize the thyroid cancer in the Service of General Surgery of the Hospital Dr. Agostinho Neto during the years 2012-2016. Method: A descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study was made. The following variables were approached: age; sex; topography, size, evolutionary stage and histological type of the tumor; injure associate; moment of choice of the total tiroidectomy and time for the choice of carrying out it and postoperative complications. Results: the patients were women mainly; they had age between 29 and 39 years; it was affected more the left lobe of the gland and the tumor was smaller than 2 cm; it was more frequent the tumor papilar; the most associate lesion was the goiter multinodular. The biggest proportion in the patient one was in the stage II of the cancer, and survived2 to 5 years. All they were carried out tiroidectomy that decided from the preoperative consultation in 53.0%. 23.5% of the patients presented some complication. Conclusions: It is revealed the importance of the precocious diagnosis and the decision of the total tiroidectomy from the preoperative consultation.
