ABSTRACT
Introduction: the immediate obturator oral-maxillofacial prosthesis prevents the physical and psychological deterioration of the maxillectomized patient. Its installation must be at the same time as the surgical removal, for which the prosthetist must master the treatment plan formulated by the team. Objective: to describe the characteristics of patients with maxillary defects in the oral maxillofacial prosthesis service.
Method: a cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was carried out in the period from September 2015 to January 2017. 29 patients with maxillary defects attended the Oral-maxillofacial Prosthesis Service of Raúl González Sánchez School of Dentitry, Havana 2015-2017. The variables included were: sex, age, origin, location, complexity of the defect, previous prosthetic assessment, type of maxillectomy, and type of oral communication and closure of it.
Results: female sex predominated, ages between 60 and older, with high acquired etiology mainly pathological, the defects were mostly partial and simple, without prosthetic assessment prior to resection and therefore without closure of the oral communication in the surgical act. The patients who were evaluated prior to the intervention were fitted with the immediate obturator prosthesis, with satisfactory results in relation to retention, support, stability and limited extra-dental and intra-oral sequelae.
Conclusions: the study showed that the placement of an immediate obturator prosthetic device in the surgical act is a primordial element to prevent future problems and facilitate the reincorporation of the maxillectomized patient into the family and social environment.
