ABSTRACT

Introduction: aging in Cuba is a demographic problem; more geriatric patients are daily consulted for acute abdominal conditions requiring surgeries of emergency.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted at Abel Santamaria Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital during 2011-2013. A population of 110 cases was comprised. Descriptive statistics methods were used. The information was extracted from the medical histories.
Objective: to describe the surgical acute abdomen in old-aged patients who underwent surgeries of emergency at Abel Santamaria Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital during 2011-2013.
Results: 51,8% of patients were men, the age group between 60 and 74 years predominated; hypertension was the most frequent risk factor (56,6%); time of evolution of pre-admission symptoms resulted before 12 hours (49,1%). Complicated vesicular lithiasis was the most common diagnosis in both sexes (62,3%) and isotonic dehydration the main complication. The average hospital stay reported was 1 to 3 days. The most frequent cause of death was intra-abdominal infection.
Conclusions: surgical acute abdomen in geriatric patients showed a high frequency, morbidity and mortality, it was required to assume new strategies for the management of this population group.
