Methods: a descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study was carried out at Ormani Arenado school in Pinar del Rio during 2016. The target group was comprised of 997 adolescents; a sample of 507 was randomly conformed achieving the inclusion criteria. Data were obtained through surveys; the ethical principles were respected.
Results: male sex (64,89%) and the group of more than 16 years of age (40,04%) predominated, with a mean age of 15,73 years. The mean age at onset of alcohol and cigarette consumption was 12,78 (SD = 2,3) and 14,25 (SD = 1.5) respectively. Low alcohol consumption (57,79%) as well as frequent cigarette users (34,91%). Among the psychosocial factors found were inadequate father-child communication, the difficulty of resisting group pressures and the ease of access of these substances.
