ABSTRACT
Introduction: ectopic pregnancy is the implantation of the product of conception outside the endometrial cavity; it is a cause of management and responsible for 10% of maternal mortality. Objective: to characterize ectopic pregnancy clinically and epidemiologically from January 2016 and January 2017 at Abel Santamaría Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional research was carried out. The sample consisted of 62 patients treated at the Obstetrics and Gynecology service at Abel Santamaría Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital during the above mentioned period, with a confirmed diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy. Statistical records and clinical histories were reviewed, and a registration model to collect the information was applied.
Results: it was found that the highest incidence of ectopic pregnancy prevailed on the age group between 15 and 25 years old (47%). The risk factors with the highest incidence were intrauterine devices (34%). The most frequent symptoms were pelvic pain, menstrual delay and bloody losses (37%). The most used surgical technique was left salpingectomy in 39% of the cases. The infection in the wound and the urinary infection were the most frequent complications for 32% of the cases.
Conclusions: in 5 out of 10 women the diagnosis was clinically performed. It is necessary to create new ways and methods to manage the risk factors of this condition, since its incidence increases.
